Chapter 8 The Great Research=The Great Myth

The chapter starts out by talking about how at schools they have yearly teacher awards that would go to the teacher that was the best researcher which fed to the myth of a great researcher = a great teacher. They then go on to compare athletes with undergraduate professors by saying that they dont have the time and energy to focus on undergraduate education. Then the chapter talks about how lecture classes are now a hard way to teach students in big universities where there are 300 kids in one lecture hall. Kids often don't pay attention like they would in a smaller university. The chapter goes on to talk about how universities decided to give research professors just one big lecture class a year, this would help them save money and get the most out of the professors. The chapter then talks about how students go into lecture classes of 1200 people and never once have a one on one conversation with their professor before they graduate. The  chapter then goes on to show how kids have admitted that lectures are a waste of time where half of them dont even pay attention or may not even show up. The chapter then goes on to explain how professors do not accept "individualized instructional approaches." The chapter finishes by talking about how there are still excellent small colleges and universities left in the world that have face to face teaching with small classes and not huge lecture halls. This chapter was also a hard read and it was hard to engage into this one.
