Chapter 14 Cheap Beer: The Oxygen of the Greek System
This chapter starts off by talking about how again the movie "Animal House" is a huge reason for showing kids how to drink and the way of Greek life. It then refers to a lot of different parties at different schools by Greek Life and how Mississippi State referred to the sports teams saying they may have lost the game but we never lose a party. It then goes on to talk about the problems with binge drinking by fraternities and how kids were dying from it. Then they defined what binge drinking is saying that binge drinking are 5 or more drinks for an average sized male and they also said there are heavy binge drinking schools and low binge drinking schools. They also talk about how binge drinking doesn't relate only to Greek life but all undergraduate students who work hard all week long with work and school and they party on the weekends. They compare undergrad students to normal people who are the same age and said that everyday people who are not in school don't binge drink as much as kids who are in college. They then talk about how woman are starting to binge drink as much as men and when woman binge drink they more times than not put themselves into a life threatening situation. They then talk briefly about how kids in dorms experience second hand binge effects. For example when a kid pulls the fire alarm. They then talk about how at Indiana University they have banned alcohol from all dorms, but this caused disobedience from the kids and the off campus party scene became huge because of this. They finish up talking about how schools are trying to slow down off campus drinking but at the same time this can hurt the schools application and kids who are interested in going to their schools.
