Chapter 5 Admissions Office Scams

This chapter begins by talking about how colleges populations have started to decline since the huge numbers from the baby boomers. So they explain how colleges run these "scams" to get kids into their institution. They say that your SAT scores matter but in reality they do not matter. Most schools might say they are very picky but in reality they admit just about everyone just so they can get the money from the families. They then go on to explain how college visits are not about meeting with teachers or seeing the library or about academics at all. It is about the sports, the party life, and all that, this is especially true when it comes to Division 1 schools. The chapter finishes up by talking about the University of Oregon. It talked about the rise of the athletics (particularly basketball and football) and also the rise of Greek life that came with it. Also when Oregon appeared in the Rose Bowl, applications to the school jumped significantly.
