Chapter 13 Undergraduate Education Triage: Honors Program Lifeboats

This chapter starts off by talking about how honors classes reach out to the kids more and are better for them over normal undergraduate lectures where the kids sometimes don't know whats going on or can even see because they are so far back in the lecture hall that it doesn't matter. It then goes on to talk about how UMass wants to make a school solely for honors students. It says that the honors classes at UMass have full time professors and the classes have up to 20 kids or less in there. The chapter then refers back to Animal House when talking about how UMass had the nickname, "ZooMass" attached to it and how they could rid of it. It also goes back in talking about how a sports teams success can attract more students which it did in Umass's case. It then goes on to talk about how schools like Temple, the students here pay to for these honors classes because they know that they are benefiting more by taking them then the normal undergraduate classes. It then goes on to explain how teachers would rather teach these honors courses over undergraduate courses because the school gives them more benefits or other rewards for teaching these classes. Also the professors enjoy how engaged the students are in these courses. It then goes on to talk about how honors students have certain dorms designated to them. The chapter finishes talking about how Michigan State has a great honors program and the undergraduate students focus on constant partying and drinking before and after sporting events for the school.
